Monday Afternoon

Tashie is still making up for lost sleep last night, so physiotherapy crew decided to wait until tomorrow morning to get her up again. Blake and Cameron made a surprise visit, bringing with them a Rolls Royce of walkers. . . with a jaunty mylar "Get Well" balloon tied to the handle with a pale blue ribbon. The nurses suggested we spirit it away before someone else does, so it awaits Tashie's return home, at the moment in the back of my car, but eventually to Camp Sherman. Clarke drove Fred in to spend time with Tashie, mostly just sitting here quietly with her while she dozed. His California caretaker, Wanda, flies up tonight to help out with Fred's needs while we're all preoccupied with Tashie's needs. Clarke will meet her at the airport and drive her up to Camp Sherman later tonight.

Sent to Eliza on 11 July from Toronto:

Dearest Eliza,

My heart jumped starting to read your email moments ago. Thank you for notifying me and please keep me "in the loop".

All I can think of right now is your mother's health and how much I love her. As you know, Tashie's is a most precious love, one I always feel but can never fully match or even begin to return in kind. But I'm entrusting you to carry every drop of my bottomless "Tashie love" [the love I'm sending you this moment] to her bedside and drip the full infusion into her heart, her head, her bloodstream. She's always been so abundantly "hip", I suppose it was only a matter of time before it got broken. Now she's a force of Nature with a broken hip, a common-enough injury for the over-60 crowd. I know you and Bruce will see she gets the "best-est" possible care. Was there anyone with her when it happened? Was it a slip or a fit of dizziness that caused the fall?

The Quakers sort themselves as "birthright" and "convinced". Almost from the start 35 years ago, I've thought of "Mrs. Livingston" as my "convinced" mother-figure--wise beyond her years [although recently Tashie's "wisdom" and "years" may have equilibrated themselves into a Casablanca-like "beautiful friendship"]. I'm remembering how resilient she is, how tough she is, how determined she can be and hope all those qualities are rallying her to a speedy recovery. I can imagine Tash more than "annoyed" with herself for this mis-step--I expect she's in high dudgeon about it and itching to get "back to normal" ASAP! [Trying to channel her words here...]

How tough this must be for you and Bruce and Fred and so many others. My thoughts are with you and my well of "Eliza love" is at high tide, as always.

Pins, needles and prayers,

George/Jess
